About Cellular Services at Michigan Tech

In the course of carrying out job responsibilities, employees may need to perform business-related mobile communications. As such, Michigan Tech provides two options that can be used to meet their needs.

Corporate Cellular Service Plan Option

The Telecommunictions department can help departments acquire cell phones, wireless aircards, or smartphones/personal digital assistants (PDAs) for University use. The equipment and service plans are provided through agreements made with AT&T and Verizon Wireless. You simply decide on the device and plan you are interested in and Telcom will handle the administration and the billing.

Placing an Order

To get started, check out the devices and plans currently available from AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Then send a request to it-help@mtu.edu with the following information:

  • User name
  • User department, building, room number, and phone number
  • The account number you want charged
  • The complete description of services needed
  • Any other relevant information, i.e. vendor, plan, equipment type, model number, etc.

Once the information has been received, Telcom will process the order and notify you when the the device has arrived. All charges for equipment and service will be billed through Telcom.

Viewing Usage Details

Both AT&T and Verizon Wireless offer you the ability to view your cell phone information online. Although you won't be able to personally make changes to your account, you will be able to view the information regarding your current service plan, features, usage, and prior month billing.

AT&T Customers: Go to https://www.wireless.att.com/business/index.jsp. You will need to register to get started. Once you have clicked the Register button and entered your cell phone number, you will be sent a text message with your PIN.

Verizon Customers: You will need to request access by sending a request to it-help@mtu.edu. Be sure to include your name and cell phone number in your email message. Once received, you will be sent an email with your username, password, and a link to the Verizon online portal.

Individual Cellular Service Plan Option for Faculty/Staff

If employees prefer to own their own phone or manage their own service plan, they can be provided with a Cellular Service Device Allowance to cover the job-related usage as defined by the department chair or director.

The University Cellular Service Device Allowance Policy was established to simplify purchasing, reimbursement, and approval issues associated with cellular service devices, and to allow flexibility in plans and service providers for employees.
