MTU Data Network — Data Service Offerings

MTU Data Network Service Offerings at a Glance

Network Direct Connections (for faculty, staff, or lab connections)

Direct connections to the campus network are the mainstay of the network service offerings. Individual network devices, usually computers or network printers, are directly attached to the campus network using a network patch cable to a physical telecommunications outlet. A variety of speed offerings are supported, and each connection belongs to a work group, called a host domain.

Campus network service includes the following standard Ethernet connections:

  • 10 Base-T
  • 100 Base-T
  • 1000 Base-TX
  • 1000 Base-SX
  • 1000 Base-LX
  • 10000 Base-LX
  • 10000 Base-SX

For more information on Network Direct Connections, see http://www.tc.mtu.edu/data//dataservices/directconnect.htm

Multi-Host Network Connections (for faculty, staff, or lab connections)

Multi-Host is a 'shared' network service that allows multiple network hosts to be connected through a hub/switch to a single jack. There are two variants of this service: Standard Multi-Host which supports up to four network hosts connected to a 100Mbps network connection, and Personal Multi-Host which supports two network hosts connected to a 10Mbps network connection.

Because the service is charged per jack connection, it is an ideal solution for small labs or offices where multiple machines or specialized equipment can be added to the network without having to incur the costs associated with adding additional network.

For more information on Multi-Host see http://www.tc.mtu.edu/data//dataservices/multihost.htm

Private Bridge Group Connections (for faculty, staff, or lab connections)

Private Bridge Group Connections are MTUNet Direct Connections that belong to a private LAN group. As such, the service enables users to maintain a private network on the common campus network infrastructure. All of the speed settings that apply to Direct Connections also apply to
Private Bridge (or Private VLAN) connections: 10H, 10F, 100F, Auto.

When no public access to a network is desired, a private bridge is a perfect solution as in the case of research equipment that only needs to communicate with a network server for data acquisition. Because the service utilizes industry standard 8021Q VLAN tags, it allows multiple networks to be delivered on the same campus network equipment. As such, it is also an ideal solution for networked alarm circuits, point-of-sale equipment, networked surveillance cameras, robot control systems, or other isolated applications.

For more information on Private Bridge Group Connections, contact Telcom at 487-2000 or email telcom-request@mtu.edu

Lab Access Network Service (for lab connections)

The Lab Tools Network Service enables MTUNet Direct Connections to be added to a Lab Access Group, which allows lab supervisors or teaching staff to use a web tool to restrict or enable network access to/from the lab machines. This tool allows departments to set up lab machines that do not require user login, but allow MTU staff to supervise access to the MTU network and the Internet.

For more information on the Lab Access Network Service, contact Telcom at 487-2000 or email telcom-request@mtu.edu

Resnet (for students living in university housing)

The Residence Life Network (Resnet) provides individuals living in university housing high-speed access to the University’s network.

When you subscribe to Resnet, your personal computer (which must have an Ethernet card installed) is registered and connected to the University’s network at 100 Mbps using a network patch cable connected to a telecommunications wall outlet.

A small collection of public domain network applications is available to Resnet users. Resnet is supported by a group of talented operators and service providers who make sure you have 24-hour access.

For more information on Resnet see: http://www.resnet.mtu.edu

Rovernet (for all faculty, staff, and students)

Rovernet is a network service available to all current students, faculty and staff of Michigan Technological University at no charge. Providing and supporting Rovernet is a joint effort of many university departments.

Rovernet is designed to allow you to take your laptop or PDA and "rove" around campus to gain access to network resources (such as the web and e-mail).

There are two components to RoverNet. The first component consists of Wireless "hot zones" (access points) which allow you to gain access at speeds up to 11 Mbps in 802.11b locations and up to 54Mbps in 802.11g locations. The second component consists of wired Ethernet locations which allow you to gain access at speeds of 10 Mbps from a wired network jack

For more information on Rovernet see: http://www.rovernet.mtu.edu
