Network Management Policy

Telecommunications Engineering is responsible for the design, installation, and management of the University's data and telephone network. As such, MTU Telcom has instituted the Network Management Policy to ensure the availability and reliability of the University's telecommunications infrastructure.

Refer to Section 10.7.2 of the University Operating Procedures Manual for more information on the MTU Telecommunications Services Network Management Policy and Procedure.

MTU Computer Use Policy

MTU considers access to computer resources to be a privilege granted on the condition that each member of the University community uses these resources responsibly, and in accord with professional and university standards.

The Computer Use Policy describes MTU's computer resources, the responsibilities assumed by users of the system, the services provided to support and assist users, and professional and university standards that must be observed by all users of MTU's computer resources..

Merit Network (MichNet) Acceptable Use Policy

The Merit Network (MichNet) Acceptable Use Policy is a guide to the acceptable use of Merit network facilities and services (Services). Any Member or Affiliate organization or individual connected to Merit's network (MichNet) in order to use it directly, or to connect to any other network(s), must comply with this policy and the stated purposes and Acceptable Use policies of any other network(s) or host(s) used.

Each Member and Affiliate organization is responsible for the activity of its users and for ensuring that its users are familiar with this policy or an equivalent policy. In addition, each Member and Affiliate is encouraged to maintain and enforce its own Acceptable Use policies. The provisions of this policy govern all use of the Services, including any unsupervised anonymous network access offered by Members or Affiliates.

Security Task Force Report

Michigan Tech's Department of Information Technology formed a Network Security Task Force (NSTF) to address issues relating to the current national crisis and the recent dramatic increase in Internet attacks.

As a result of the NSTF study, the CAC Security Subcommittee was charged with creating and maintaining an appropriate security policy for MTU as follows:

  • recommend a plan describing the objects and appropriate level of security for campus electronic resources.
  • identify, prioritize and recommend action for security problems on campus
  • define and maintain the requirements for campus-wide security plans.
