MTU Telecommunication's Physical Plant — Architecture & Features

Architecture & Features at a Glance

General Description of Telecommunication's Physical Plant

MTU maintains an extensive telecommunications physical plant infrastructure. MTU has a modern service delivery platform that rivals many phone or cable companies. Well engineered solutions are used to address the needs of the campus community.

In-Building Facilities

All buildings are wired to meet the demands of the network and services delivered. All current construction and renovation of buildings require category 6 cabling. Many locations have been updated from the older cable schemes to meet the current standards.

Backup Power & Ventilation

Where possible generator power is used to protect the network facilities from utility power failures. All critical networking equipment has UPS power to protect from line variations and outages.

With increased demands on the networking locations additional ventilation is installed as needed to extend the life of equipment. For most locations building air exchange is adequate to cool equipment, but several locations require independent HVAC systems.

Building Score Card

All buildings are routinely reviewed and rated according to our current standards. Using this information it is possible to maintain an accurate state of the network

Outside Plant Description

With several miles of fiber optical cabling the multi-service network is able to accommodate all anticipated networking needs.

EERC NOC Physical Facilities

Our Network Operations Center will feature consolidated network and performance monitoring for the DCS and Telecommunications departments. Anticipated completion date: Dec 2004.

top

EERC Data Center

The main data center has undergone an extensive update in the past 18 months. Most facilities were upgraded to carrier-grade status. Independent HVAC systems along with a major electrical system upgrade were paramount to the operation. The outdated and overloaded generator will be replaced by a more reliable and larger model fall 2004.

Access to this facility is restricted to authorized personal only.

Wireless Links

Many areas of campus are serviced by industry standard WiFi wireless technologies 802.11b or 802.11g.  Subscribers to the services are able to roam from location to location with ubiquitous coverage.  Many "Hot Zones" exist on campus with expanding coverage each year.

top

Radio Facilities

We maintain several microwave radio links to facilitate transport of our network to areas unreachable by our optical plant. These links are thoroughly engineered to provide an uptime greater than 99.99%.

The Michigan Tech Fund (Hancock) and Mont Ripley (Ripley) are provided a fast and reliable link to the campus via these ISM/UNII microwave links.

Tower Facilities

Michigan Tech Facilities Department owns and maintains a set of towers on Arcadia hill. This facility services several radio and wireless services in the community.

MTU Telecom maintains a consultative role on technical aspects such as RF spacing, loading, and other relevant issues.

top

Parking Gates and Card-access Systems

Working closely with Public Safety and Auxiliary Services, we maintain the network elements and associated hardware on parking gates and other card-access systems.

New Additions or Upgrades

With continual growth at MTU we are in the forefront of providing technology where needed to support the mission of the institution.

Several recent projects reflect our commitment to providing current technology in all campus locations.
