About Michigan Tech Telecommunications Projects

While the Telecommunications Department does not participate in 'pure' research initiatives, it does focus on investigating new technologies with a goal of finding cost-effective, well engineered, and highly functional features or services that would benefit the campus community or improve the performance, security, or reliability of the existing voice, video, and data networks.

The Department is also ultimately responsible for the the design, installation, and maintenance of the University's high quality multi-service telecommunications network infrastructure.

Design and engineering is the cornerstone of the campus network and all capital projects must undergo extensive design and review considerations in accordance with University standards and National Electrical Code (NEC) and OSHA requirements. As such, project management is essential to ensure that project objectives are accomplished in the most efficient and effective manner.

Telecommunication Standards and Project Management

Telecommunications ClosetAll building projects and major renovations must meet currently accepted telecommunications standards and the Telecommunications group is responsible for ensuring these standards are met. Refer to Section 10.7.3 of the University Operating Procedures Manual for more information on the Michigan Tech Telecommunications Services Network Cabling Policy and Procedure.

Our engineering group has subject matter experts in networking, telecommunications, RF, and physical plant installations. Our engineering team monitors ongoing projects, works closely with vendors and contractors, and often works in a consultative role for outside departments or companies. Estimates on projects are based upon estimated time and materials unless other arrangements are made. All engineering and design work is performed by competent skilled technicians and engineers.

Construction Requirements

The Telecommunications Policies & Procedures and Construction Specifications are intended to ensure compliance with University standards as well as the National Electrical Code (NEC) and OSHA requirements. They are also to ensure the reliability of the telecommunications physical plant.

Project Requests

All work must be requested via a request placed with the Telecommunications Department. Requests for quotes and detailed engineering may be handled on an individual case basis by the appropriate engineering group.

Projects requests can be sent to telcom-request@mtu.edu. All project requests will be reviewed every other Tuesday at the Telcom Engineering project meeting.
