Getting Started with Rovernet 2.0

Configuring your Device

To obtain access to this encrypted network, you will need to configure your device for WPA/WPA2 authentication. Configuring your wireless device to use WPA/WPA2 takes a few minutes. It also simplifies the login process. Once you have been recognized by the system, you will no longer need to login via a web page each time you want to connect to the network. You will, however, need to meet the following system requirements in order to connect to Rovernet 2.0.

System Configuration Requirements

  • Be within the "MichiganTech" and/or "MichiganTech-Mobile" SSID wireless coverage areas.

  • Be a current Michigan Tech student, faculty, or staff member.

  • Have a computer or mobile device with a network-compatible wireless card, operating system, and drivers to support WPA2/WPA.

  • Have a valid ISO User Name and Password.

Note: To access the MichiganTech and/or MichiganTech-Mobile WPA/WPA2 wireless network for the first time, your ISO password needs to be synchronized with Michigan Tech’s Active Directory Server. Once your password has been synchronized, you will be able to complete the steps required to configure your device using the new MichiganTech SSID. As of March 1, 2009, if you had logged into the Initial Sign-On (ISO) site for any reason, your password was automatically synchronized for you.

Configuration Settings

  • Security Type: IEEE 802.1x Authentication
  • SSID: MichiganTech (for general devices) and MichiganTech-Mobile for Handheld Devices
  • Network Authentication: WPA2 preferred (WPA available)
  • Data Encryption: AES preferred (TKIP available)
  • EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Authentication Method: Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2 )
  • Credentials: ISO Username and Password
  • Trust Root Certification Authority: GlobalSign Root CA
  • Certificate Issued to: www.login.mtu.edu

Note: The Network Authentication and Data Encryption settings are determined by the hardware in your machine and by how up-to-date your operating system is. If your system is not able to authenticate using WPA2-AES, then you may want to try WPA2-TKIP or WPA-TKIP.
