MTU Voice Network Service Offerings at a Glance

University IP Telephone System (Faculty & Staff)

IP Telephony integrates a single communications environment that delivers advanced applications to users, no matter where they are. It means higher productivity, faster decision-making and lower cost.

MTU has taken advantage of the convergence of voice and data networks at a controllable pace, re-using up to 85 percent of existing infrastructure.

University Legacy Telephone Service (Faculty & Staff)

As part of the IP telephone conversion project, leased Centrex service was converted to a legacy PBX system to allow Telcom to implement the IP telephone system at a controlled pace.

University Voicemail (Faculty & Staff)

The new University telephone system includes a voicemail service that users can choose to activate or remove at no charge. The legacy telephone (Centrex) system also provides voicemail as an additional cost item.

University Local Calling Plan Rates (Faculty & Staff)

Local area calls and domestic long distance calls are re-billed to telephone subscribers based on usage. Administrative and academic departments are charged $0.09 per local call, the same rate that the University pays its provider for this service.

The housing areas and Daniell Heights customers pay a higher line rate for telephone service, but no extra charges for local calls made, similar to plans offered to residential customers.

Student Telephone Services (Daniell Heights)

The University provides analog telephone services to tenants of Daniell Heights. There is a $25.00 installation fee and a monthly usage fee of $21.50 for local telephone service. Tenants must provide their own telephone and will not be assessed any additional fees. Both local calls and domestic long distance calls can be made for no additional charge.Voicemail is also provided at no extra charge.

Student Telephone Services (Residence Halls)

The University provides analog telephone services to Residence Halls students, which is included in the costs for their room and board. Although students must provide their own telephone, they will not incur any usage fees. Both local calls and domestic long distance calls can be made free of charge. Voicemail is also available at no charge.

Because dialtone is automatically available in the Residence Halls, students do not have to not have to notify Telcom of their intention to utilize local phone services. However, Telcom does need to be notified if a student wishes to utilize the free voicemail service or if they need to utilize international long distance services.

TECHCONNECT

TECH CONNECT is a long distance direct dialing service which can be used to make calls while on campus. This service is provided to staff, faculty, and MTU students who live in the Residence Halls or Daniell Heights.

University Calling Cards (Faculty & Staff)

University faculty and staff that are traveling may obtain a University Calling Card for telephone expenses while traveling on University business. The card can be used all across the U.S. and internationally.

Charges incurred are automatically billed to department accounts.

Domestic Long Distance and International Calling

Domestic long distance calls placed from university telephones are rebilled to departments and individual telephone subscribers at a rate of $0.05 per minute.

International calling rates vary by country and change periodically. Telecommunications Customer Service can be contacted to determine current rates for any country.

MTU Cellular Service

Cellular Service is available to all MTU Faculty, Staff and Students.

University Cellular Rental Plan (Faculty & Staff)

Telecommunications Services has a limited number of cell phones available for temporary rental for staff or faculty traveling on University business.

Paging Service

Pagers for lease and paging service are available to MTU faculty, staff and students. Monthly lease charges vary depending on type and service.

MTU MEET-ME Telephone Conferencing Service

The service is provided through Ameritech and allows conference calls of up to 26 people connected together. Callers enter the conference via a local number or remote callers dialing a 800 number. The service can be used by anyone but must be scheduled in advance.

MTU Audio Conference Bridge

Telecommunications Services has set up a contract with the SBC conference bridge service. Any university faculty or staff member can use the bridge for multi-person audio conferencing.

Charges for this service are rebilled to university accounts.

SPEAK@EASE Directory Service (487-1885)

From on or off campus, telephone users dialing 487-1885 will be greeted with an automated voice-response system to assist callers in locating university departments and individual staff members. This service is updated with the directory information maintained by Human Resources.

Callers, that prefer to talk to a real person, can say 'Operator' to get transferred to the SwitchBoard operator in Public Safety.
