MTU Long Distance Service (TECH CONNECT)

Overview/Description

TECH CONNECT is a long distance direct dialing service which can be used to make calls while on campus. This service is provided to staff, faculty, and MTU students who live in the Residence Halls or Daniell Heights. All billing for this service is handled through Telcom.

When you sign up for TECH CONNECT, you will be given a Personal Billing Number (PBN) along with dialing instructions, credit limit and service information. You pay only 5¢ a minute for all in-state and state-to-state calls, regardless of when the call is made. Although international calling is part of the plan, international rates vary depending upon the country you are calling. There are no sign up fees, no monthly service fees, no additional surcharges, and no minimum usage requirements.

It's easy to stay connected because you are billed only for the calls placed with your PBN. There is no need to split phone bills or share codes with your roommates.

Enrolling in TECH CONNECT

If you are an on-campus student or an MTU staff or faculty member, you can receive TECH CONNECT by sending an on-line request from our web site: www.tc.mtu.edu/forms/techconnectreq.htm. Or, if you prefer, you can contact the Telcom Customer Service Center, which is located in B24 in the basement of the EERC building or by calling them at 487-2000. Their office hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Summer hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday.

When you sign up for TECH CONNECT, you will be given a calling card with a unique Personal Billing Number (PBN). This PBN is a series of unique digits tied to your individual account and gives you the ability to place long distance, direct-dialed calls from most campus telephones. Because each customer receives their own PBN, they will receive an individual monthly bill for only the calls placed with their PBN. Your PBN is immediately activated and ready for you to use.

You will also be assigned a credit limit and will be able to keep track of your account balance by calling Telcom Customer Service at (906) 487-2000.

Your PBN Number

Your PBN number is not assigned to anybody but you. You will be responsible for all charges associated with your PBN number, including calls others make while borrowing your card. You are advised not to lend your PBN number to others, you will be the one responsible for the calls made.

Your Bill

You will be billed by Michigan Tech Telcom. The bills are sent out in the beginning of each month. In the event that you do not receive your bill, you are still responsible for your payment. You are able to make payments using the pre-addressed envelope sent with your bill, or at the Telcom office, B24 of the EERC Building. If you have any questions regarding your bill, please contact Telcom Customer Service at 906-487-2000.

Additional Fees
You may incur additional fees including:

  • Late fee in the event that we do not receive your payment by the due date
  • Returned Check Fee: $20

Lost or Stolen PBN Numbers

Be sure to keep your card in a secure place. In the event that your PBN number is lost or stolen, contact Telcom Customer Service at 906-487-2000 immediately!

Other Long Distance Programs

Please note that all residence and administrative telephone lines are the property of Michigan Technological University. You are not allowed to change carriers or sign up for services with other carriers or programs that are billed to your telephone number. Charges for these types of accounts will be billed to the university’s main telephone number, resulting in possible fines and penalties being charged back to you. Long distance service or programs in which you receive the bill at your address are allowed, such as those that use toll free access numbers or prepaid calling cards.
