Michigan Technological University's Telecommunications (Telcom) department is responsible for providing voice, data, and video services, as well as telecommunications infrastructure to all university constituents.These services are purchased or leased and include data network connections, telephone services, pagers, cable TV, and many others.
Telcom at a Glance
Telcom maintains a high-performance data network with fiber-optic network cabling for on-campus connectivity and fixed microwave links for select locations off the main campus. Telcom also maintains a wireless LAN network which provides subscribers with mobile computing capabilities.
Telcom operates a Non-Cable MVPD / SMATV / Cable TV System to provide Michigan Tech students on campus with television programming. The video network is also used to distribute video conferencing and distance learning content.
Telcom supports a variety of voice services and systems for the campus community. Voice offerings include both analog and digital telephone service, voicemail, voice-recognition directory services, and more.
Michigan Tech maintains an extensive telecommunications physical plant infrastructure with a modern service delivery platform that rivals many phone or cable companies.

Rovernet offers a WPA Enterprise Solution that gives students, staff, and faculty greater flexibility and security when accessing the campus wireless network. The "MichiganTech" (SSID) is only accessible via WPA Enterprise (PEAP) authentication. Once authenticated, the traffic is encrypted. To obtain access to this encrypted network, wireless clients will be required to configure their devices for WPA/WPA2 authentication.

IP Telephony integrates a single communications environment that delivers advanced applications to users, no matter where they are. It means higher productivity, faster decision-making and lower cost. MTU has taken advantage of the convergence of voice and data networks at a controllable pace, re-using up to 85 percent of existing infrastructure.
FEATURED SERVICE
Michigan Tech owns and operates a Multichannel Video Programming Distribution (MVPD) system known as MTU Cable. The system is registered with the Federal Communications Commission, and assigned NCID: MIA060.
The system delivers broadcast, movie, information, international, sports, music, and entertainment channels throughout the campus residential community. The system consists of satellite receivers, cable television modulators, and an extensive distribution network. Basic cable service is provided to over 1300 locations on campus with many subscribing to the premium movie channels.
